ADM-Aeolus is the European Space Agency's (ESA) Atmospheric Dynamic Mission (ADM) satellite, and the fourth Earth Explorer mission to be developed within ESA's Living Planet Programme. Due for launch in September 2018, Aeolus will use laser technology to become the first satellite to directly observe wind profiles from space. This will provide much-needed data to improve the quality of weather forecasts as well as contribute to long-term climate research. The mission is named after Aeolus, who in Greek mythology was appointed 'keeper of the winds' by the Gods.
