In the arrangement of Chaplain Rights manuscript forpublication the compiler has endeavored to preserve the gen-eral features of the text, and carry out the design of theauthor, so far as this was known from personal expressions. Only such changes weremade as seemed to be necessary to conform to this generaldesign. The greater part of the writing was done bythe author under circumstances that were not con-ducive to the most careful thought. Often the facil-ities for writing were of the crudest sort ; and yet avery remarkable feature of this most remarkable col-lection of manuscript, is that it was so well writtenand was kept in such excellent condition. In theearlier months of the Regiments service the history waswritten in skeleton, and many important facts were eitheromitted or were presented in a fragmentary shape. To fillout such omitted portions the compiler had to rely on hisown private diary, which he fortunately found, covering thatper
