The vault in which the remains of Washington were laid,had already become dilapidated by the action of the growingroots of the trees around it, and, as we have seen, Washington,in contemplation of the immediate construction of a new one,had chosen a place for it. In his will he left the following-directions : The family vault at Momit Vernon requiring repairs, andbeing improperly situated besides, I desire that a new one, of. WASHINGTON S BIER. 330 MOUNT VERNON brick, and upon a larger scale, iriaj be built at the foot ofwhat is called the Vineyard Enclosure, on the ground which ismarked out, in which my remains, and those of my deceasedrelatives (now in the old vault), and such others of my familyas may choose to be entombed there, may be de])osited.
