This illustration is signed by Matthew Brady. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He served from March 1861 to his assassination on April 15, 1865. Mathew B. Brady (died 1896) was one of the earliest photographers in American history. Best known for his scenes of the Civil War, he studied under inventor Samuel Morse, who pioneered the daguerreotype technique in America.
