This collection was made in Coorg, a small British Province inSouthern India. The following detailed description of the country and camps isgiven by Mr. Shortridge :-— Coorg, which is the smallest province in India, is situatedchiefly on the slopes and summits of the Western Ghats. Boundedon the north by South Kanara and the Hassan district of 3 MAMMAL SURVEY OF INDIA. 487 On tlie west, north-west, and south-west the boundarjT runsalong the foot of the Ghats, some of the peaks of which rise to aheight of fiom 5,000 to 6,000 feet, overlooking the low lands ofSouth Kanara and Malabar. The Brahmagiri Hills constitute aformidable barrier between South Coorg and the wooded tracts ofthe Wynaad. On the north and east for a short distance theOauvery and Hemavati rivers mark the boundary between Mysoreand Coorg, but elsewhere (to the east) the country merges imper-ceptably into the general tableland of Mysore. Coorg lies geographical^ between north latitude 11 -5 6 and12-50 and between east longitude 75-22 and 76-12. Area 1,582 square miles, greatest length and breadth 60 by 40miles. Average rainfall 124 inches. Population (1911) 174,976. General elevation between 3,000 and 3,500 feet.
