'The Battle of San Romano', 1432 (c1435-1440). The Battle of San Romano was fought between the armies of Siena and Florence. It is said that the painting was commisssioned by the Bartolini Salimbeni family, but was coveted by Lorenzo de Medici, who forcibly appropriated it for his palace in Florence.
