The Castle of Mértola has origins of the islamic period from the 10th to the 12th century. Later is was the headquarter of the powerful Saint James Order which was resposible for the protection of the Saint James Pilgrim´s Way. In all the Museum Village of Mértola can be found important archaeological heritages of the islamic and roman time.
