Its wider end was at the inner angle of theeyelids. 2. Around the cornea find a whitish membrane, the Con-junctiva, which, a short distance back from the cornea, sepa-rates from the eyeball to turn forward and line the eyelid. 302 STRUCTURE OF EYE. 3. The severed muscles of the eyeball, a mass of fatwhich forms a cushion for the eye, and other tissue, shouldbe trimmed away, leaving the Optic Nerve. 4. Place the eye in its natural position, and make draw-ings of it, as seen from the front and from one side, namingthe Optic Nerve Choroid Fig. 89. Horizontal Section of Right Eye. Dissection of the Bye. — Each member of the classshould have an eye to dissect. To supply a large class it isbest to send to a slaughtering-house in the nearest large the eye muscles and other external parts have alreadybeen studied, it will not be necessary to remove the musclesand fat around the eye; in fact, they ,may well be left un-touched, as they serve as a cushion to support the eye duringdissection. The eye may conveniently be dissected on a DISSECTION OF EYE. 303 small piece of board or shingle ; and if it is desirable to turnthe eye, it is better to do so by turning the support, as theeye usually sticks to the support, and the dissection may beinjured by trying to move it. Caution. — After the eye is opened be careful not to com-press it. If the eye be held in the hand while trying to cutits tough outer coat, the jelly-like contents are easily squeezedout,
