Highland cow eating a hedge as there are areas of common grazing which means the animals are not fenced in and can wander freely
Highland cow eating a hedge on the Isle of Mull with Iona in the background. They are in an area of common grazings which means the animals are not fenced in and can wander freely. These areas of Common grazings are areas of land used by a number of crofters who have a right to graze stock on that land. There are over 1000 common grazings covering over 500,000ha across Scotland. Grazing committees are set up in the areas to manage the common grazings. They are elected by the crofters who use the land and to be regulated (protected by law) the committee must be recorded with the Crofting Commission.
