A woman's hand holding a handmade cardboard sign pleading with the US government to continue the $600 extended unemployment benefits

At the end of March 2020 the US congress passed the CARES act, which provided $600 per week federal unemployment assistance on top of what states pay, to help people jobless due to Covid-19 weather the storm. This assistance ended in July 2020. Democrats want to extend it as is, but Republicans are proposing to lower the additional benefit to $200 per week, which would spell financial disaster for Millions of people unable to return to their jobs.
