An old engraving showing two variants for the court markings for playing Hopscotch. It is from Victorian book of the 1890s on sports, games and pastimes. Hopscotch is a popular children’s playground game in which players toss a small object, called a lagger (often a shell or stone), into numbered areas of a court outlined on the ground and then hop or jump into the spaces and retrieve the object.

It can be played with several players or alone. Designs vary, but the court is usually composed of a series of squares or triangles. These numbered in the sequence in which they are to be hopped. Traditionally the court ends with a ‘safe’ or ‘home’ base in which the player may turn before completing the reverse trip (here shown top – sometimes called the cat’s cradle or plum pudding in the UK). Variants are found all over the world – a French version is called Marelle.
