Red Phalarope Phalaropus fulicaria (Linnaeus) Status: The Red Phalarope is a casual transient, with most records from Cheyenne Bottoms. Parmelee et al. (1969b) listed four speci- mens in 1959 and 1963 from Cheyenne Bottoms and six re- cords, including a group of five birds, on 22 September 1968. A bird seen on 10 May 1967 had fairly bright plumage. There are now several more records since Parmelee's publication, and the dates of occurrence have been ex- tended to 5

There are additional specimens from Douglas, Franklin, and Barton coun- ties and recent sight records for Linn and Morton counties. Habits and Habitat: The Red Phalarope should be looked for in wet, marshy habitat. Like the other phalaropes, it spins for its food. Field Marks: The rusty reddish spring plumage is unmistakable, but the winter plumage resembles the other two phalaropes'. The Red Phalarope differs in having a more uniformly gray appearance and a dark gray stripe through the eye.
