He beganlegal study in the office of Governor Clifford, of NewBedford, and was admitted to the bar in that city, fromwhich time he planned his life work along professionallines. About 1861 he came to Pittsburgh, Pa., and wasassociated in practice with Mr. Loomis and Mr. Shiras,the latter afterward being elevated to the Supreme Courtbench.
