The book of corn; a complete treatise upon the culture, marketing and uses of maize in America and elsewhere, for farmers, dealers, manufacturers and others--a comprehensive manual upon the production, sale, use and commerce of the world's greatest crop . must beregulated by the character of the soil. In the looseprairie loams of Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska the stateexperiment stations find that two to four inches willgive the best results. This depth will vary with theseason and the time in the season of planting. In an early sea-son, or if theplanting is donelate in the season, after the soil has1) e e n thoroughlywarmed, the cornc a n be planteddeeper than dur-ing a late seasonor early in the sea-son before the soilwarms up. Thedepth will alsovary somewhatwith the size ofseed. If the seedis small, it shouldbe planted shal-lower than larger seed. Where small seed has beenplanted deep in the prairie loam soils, only a small pro-portion of the plants reached the surface, while largeseed planted at the same depths all came up. The depth of planting must vary with the amountof moisture in the soil. If the soil is very moist at thetime of planting, the seed should be planted more shal-low than if the soil is comparatively dry. This is true. Fig 29—Effective Corn Marker for HandPlanting A few farmers still prefer to plant corn byhand, and for these the marker here shown willprove helpful. The materials needed are onepiece of wood, a, 2x4, about nine feet long, onepiece, b, 2x4, about four feet long-, two pieces,d d, each two feet long-, and two pieces of scant-ling, c c, about four feet long, two old plowhandles, an old pair of buggy shafts, and threeor four old cultivator shovels. Set the shovelsthe proper distance apart to make rows as re-quired. PLANTING AND CULTIVATING \\J from the fact that it is necessary to go deeper in a drysoil in order to secure the moisture for germination, and because the dry soils warm up more quickly thanthe moist soils.
