He wasattached to the Ontario in 1829, made anotherthree years cruise in European waters, and from1835 till 1838 was executive officer of the War-ren and of the Constellation, and commandedthe Grampus and the Warren in the Gulfof Mexico. In the latter year he joined the Ohio,the flag-ship of Com. Hull, in the Mediterraneansquadron, his cruise ending in 1841. He was pro-moted commander in 1842, and sailed for China on. V ^&/&^%y/& the Vcrvy^ but a severe illness forced him togive up his command and return home, fn 1845he was ordered to the Pacific as commander ofthe Congress, the flag-ship ot Com. they reached California the Mexican warhad begun, and Du Pont was at once assigned tothe command of the Cyane, 23 July, this ves-sel he capturedSan Diego, tookpossession of LaPaz, the capitalof Lower Cali-fornia, spikedthe guns of SanBias, and en-tered the har-bor of Guay-mas, burningtwo gun-boatsand cutting out V^a Mexican brigunder a heavyfire. These op-erations clearedthe Gulf of Cali-fornia of hos-tile ships, thirtyof which were taken or destroyed. He took part in the captureof Mazatlan under Com. Shubrick, 11 Nov., 1847,leading the line of boats that entered the mainharbor. On 15 Feb., 1848, he landed at San Josewith a naval force, and engaged a large bodyof Mexicans, marching three miles inland andsuccessfully relieving Lieut. Hey
