Volta shows electricity to Napoleon. 19th-century artwork of Italian physicist Count Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) demonstrating electricity to the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). Volta invented his voltaic pile (battery) in 1800 and gave demonstrations to Napoleon and others in 1801. Volta is at left, with Napoleon at centre right, turning to comment to his physician Jean-Nicolas Corvisart (1755-1821). Napoleon was impressed and conferred numerous honours on Volta. This artwork is from the title page of volume 1 of 'A Manual of Electricity, Magnetism, and Meteorology' (1841) by Irish author Dionysius Lardner.
