CANOPY OVER PLYMOUTH ROCK,—COLES HILL. the shape of a canopy, supported on four columns,and under this is the Rock, now world-famous. Theupper portion of this renowned boulder, nearly allof that which is now in sight, was for one hundredand five years separated from the original Rock, andduring this long period occupied localities remote fromthe Landing-place. In 1775, during the first freshenthusiasm of the Revolution, in endeavoring to raise the Rock from its bed on the shore, to prevent itsbeing covered by the lilling-in of a wharf about it,this piece split off. Auguries of tlie separation ofthe colonies from the mother-country were tlien drawnfrom the circumstance, and the upper part was taken,amidst much rejoicing, to Town Square, where it wasdeposited at the foot of a liberty pole from whichwaved a Mag bearing the motto, Liberty or remained there until 1S34, when at a celebrationof the Fourth of July it was carried in processionto Pilgrim Hall, deposited in the front
