Andromeda Galaxy. Composite image mosaic of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31, NGC 224) from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey. PHAT is a Hubble Space Telescope multi-cycle program to map roughly a third of the galaxy's star-forming disk. It uses 6 filters ranging from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. Andromeda, the nearest large galaxy to our own, is around 140,000 light years across, and located million light years away in the constellation of the same name.
