The centuries old port and its landmark of St. Mary's Church perched on a cliff above in Whitby, North Yorkshire, Britain. Whitby, a seaside town and small fishing port is on the north Yorkshire coast, facing the North Sea. Its other famous prominent landmark are the ruins of Whitby Abbey, also overlooking the town. Whitby is associated with Royal Navy Captain James Cook, voyager and discoverer of Australia and New Zealand where he learned his seamanship in the harbour, the horror novel of Dracula and the famous Whitby Jet black and alum found in the surrounding cliffs.
