The end of the 17 km long C99 bicycle superhighway - Vesterport Station in the Copenhagen City area. The colourful Palads Cinema Theatre building and the SAS Hotel ahead. The C99 is also called the Albertslund route as it connects the western suburb Albertslund and the centre of Copenhagen. 25% of the commuting through Copenhagen is done by bicycle, in London only 3%. The C99 from Albertslund to Vesterport Station in Copenhagen city, or vice versa, is only the first of 26 bicycle superhighways covering 300 km already under construction or planned in the region. The next will be from the north-western municipality Furesø (Farum) to Kongens Nytorv in central Copenhagen with a partial opening in October - followed by the Ballerup route. Also Elsinore (45 km more northerly) and Køge (42 km to the south), the two furthermost destinations yet, will get their bicycle superhighways. More than 20 municipalities and the Capital Region work together in this huge project. A Bicycle Superhighway is a cycle highway, where the commuters’ needs have been given the highest priority. A Bicycle Superhighway is defined both by its location, as well as its physical qualities. The highway should connect areas with many workers and students to their home, and to public transport possibilities as well. The highways should be fast, meaning as direct as possible and with as few stops as possible which implies that traffic lights will be adjusted for cyclists along the many main traffic arteries. At an average speed of 20km/h, cyclists will be able to surf a wave of green lights through the city during rush hour, without putting a foot down.
