Petros Elia of the UVW responds to Cllr Catherine Faulks, Lead Member for Skills and Enterprise, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, who was seated with the public in the council planning committee public meeting. United Voices of the World trade union members and supporters angered by the withdrawal of a promise made earlier in the day to bring the cleaners at Kensington & Chelsea council back into direct employment were protesting in the meeting to state the case for the cleaners to receive the London Living Wage. Cllr Faulks promised to come with as many other councillors as she could organise and meet the strikers the following morning and after some debate the UVW accepted her offer and left the meeting. The cleaners are currently taking part in a three day coordinated strike calling for a living wage from Kensington & Chelsea council, the Ministry of Justice and hospitals and outpatient clinics in London run by Health Care America. Employed by outsourced contracting companies, they also demand proper sick pay, conditions of service comparable to directly employed workers and to be treated with proper dignity and respect by their managers and employers.
