He is stillthe owner of this property, which is known as the ReedHouse. His fine residence site he purchased in 1886,and thereon built his present beautiful home, a spaciousmansion, having large rooms on either side of a centralhall, and possessing a dignified and attractive exterior. Since his early youth, Mr. Haszelbart has taken thedeepest interest in the movement of public affairs. Dur-ing the Civil War he ran away from home, enlisting inthe cavalry. Politically he has been a lifelong supporterof the Republican party, and a highly esteemed adviserin the councils of the party, but has always declinedoffice on account of his extensive personal affairs. Hewas for many years a director in the old German Savings& Deposit Bank, now known as the Fourteenth StreetBank, and located in Pittsburghs South Side. He holdsstock in many financial and industrial organizations inthis city and elsewhere. On Dec. 10, 1868, Mr. Haszelbart married, in Pitts-burgh (South Side), Mary Maul, who was bom inHessen Castle, Germany, daughter of George and Fred-erica (Freund) Maul, both her parents being natives ofSteinau, near Frankford, Germany.
