AUSTRIA — 1850 June 1: An 1 kreuzer yellow postage stamp depicting Coat of Arms of the Austrian monarchy. The first issue of the Austrian Monarchy (including Hungary) postage stamps. The first postage stamp issue of the Empire of Austria was a series of imperforate typographed stamps featuring the coat of arms. At first they were printed on a rough handmade paper, but after 1854 a smooth machine-made paper was used instead. Austria, is a country in the southern part of Central Europe, lying in the Eastern Alps. It is a federation of nine states, one of which is the capital, Vienna, the most populous city and state. A landlocked country, Austria is bordered by Germany to the northwest, the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. Before 1867 Austria was an absolute monarchy, which included Hungary and Lombardy-Venetia. In 1867 the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was established, with Austria and Hungary as equal partners. After World War I, in 1918, the different nationalities established their own states and only the German-speaking parts remained, forming a republic under the name “Deutschoster-reich” (German Austria), which name was shortly again changed to “Austria.” In 1938 German forces occupied Austria, which became part of the German Reich. After the liberation by Allied troops in 1945, an independent republic was re-established. 60 Kreuzer = 1 Gulden; 100 Neu-Kreuzer = 1 Gulden (1858);100 Heller = 1 Krone (1899); 100 Groschen = 1 Schilling (1925).
