Drupe cut across; each cell of the ovary has been again divided forming in all eight one-seeded chambers, x 3. in Lantana, Lippia and aUied genera the posterior carpel becomes aborted. Placentation in the yoimg ovary is parietal, the placentas subsequently uniting more or less completely in the centre of the ovary, each becoming rolled back right and left and bearing a single ovule, sometimes at the base or higher, or sometimes at the apex of the ovary-chamber, but always wdth a downward-pointing micropyle. A secondary ("false") septum frequently grows from the middle of each carpel inw^ards, separating the placenta-lobes and dividing.
