Inafter the road had been running some eighteenmonths, a fifty-five-hour test for general per-formance, with fourteen cars running, wasmade by the well-known expert mechanicalengineer, F. E. Idell. From this report, pub-lished in the Stevens Indicator for April,1889, the following is extracted: With a power plant capable of drivingtwenty cars, and running but fourteen, thecost of motive power per car, in use, wasabout $ per day of seventeen to eighteenhours. This includes interest and deprecia-tion on the cost of the power plant, motorsunder the cars and overhead system, wages oftwo engineers and two firemen, coal, oil, wasteand water. If twenty cars were run, the cost of motivepower would be $ per day. If horses wereused, 140 to 200 would be necessary for thesame service, and the cost of keeping thesewould be at least 50 cents per day per horse,or $5 per car per day. Consequently
