They form on the roots in colonies looking like lumps, called nodules, which are really nitrogen storehouses. Without these germs, legumes would rob the soil for nourishment and have a sickly growth, for few soils contain a natural supply. It is therefore necessary to "inoculate" — apply these nitrogen- gathering germs directly to fhe seed. All agricultural authorities advise inoculation of legumes.
