Wash, xviii. p. 210, 1905. Type H. gavmardii (d'Orb.).. Fig. 80.—Elainopsis gaimardii. The chief character in this genus is the spine at the base of the first, or outer primary on the under surface of the wing. The bill is short and pointed, the upper mandible is hooked, the width at the base is about half the length of the exposed culmen. The wing is rounded; the second, third, and fourth primaries longest and equal, the first about equal in length to that of the sixth. The tail is square at the tip and nearly as long as the wing. The tarsus is about twice the length of the exposed culmen, and the hind toe and claw almost equal in length to the middle toe and claw. Coloration: male and female similar. 478.
