Within the fort there CUMBERLAND HOUSE. 449 are a number of buildings, one of them (the store-house)is a very large edifice, containing extensive machineryand appliances for pressing and packing furs, and makingpemmican. Cumberland has been visited by several cele-brated Arctic explorers. In the garden there is a sun-dial which was brought from England, and erected bySir John Eichardson, and Sir John Franklin remained herea portion of the winter of 1819, while on his first over-land expedition to the Polar Seas via the McKenzie Cumberland House, Pine Island Lake. The weather was very fine during our short sojourn atCumberland, and although enjoying the hospitality of thegentleman in charge, I regretted the unavoidable delay asthe season was already far advanced. Mr. Anderson verykindly offered me a passage in his boat to Eed Eiver,which of course I could not accept as his route lay alongthe east side of the lake.
