Scrotal hernia surgery. Surgeons inserting a catheter into the retracted penis of a male patient undergoing surgery to correct a large indirect inguinal (scrotal) hernia. A hernia occurs when an organ, such as a loop of the intestine, protrudes from a weak area in the body wall. Here, the intestines are protruding through a weak area in the abdominal muscles, into the inguinal canal and have descended to the bottom of the scrotum. This has caused the scrotum to enlarge so much that it has completely enveloped the penis, causing it to retract.
