The following year Seymours opponent was thesuccessful occupant of the second position in the executivedepartment of the State; for the first time Seymour receiveda majority of the votes, and the following year he was againelected by an increased majority. He was elected four guber-natorial terms; but in April 1853, having received theappointment of United States Minister to Russia, he resignedhis position as Governor. Governor Seymour was the Amer-ican representative at the Court of Russia for four years; he 198. ^^.2^^. CONNECTICUT AS A STATE then spent a year in European travel before returning toHartford. During the Civil War he was the leader of theConnecticut Peace Democracy. Among the old-time Demo-crats he still retained his popularity, but on his re-entrance intopolitical life in 1863, as the nominee of that party for Gov-ernor, he was defeated after an exciting canvass. At theDemocratic National Convention held in 1864, GovernorSeymour received thirty-eight votes on the first ballot forcandidate for President. His latter years were passed peace-fully at Hartford, where he died Sept. 3, 1868.
