The station building is built of Staffordshire blue brick and pale grey Storeton sandstone with slate roof in the Italianate style It has a 305 metre two-storey façade with a 15-bay central section and 5-bay lateral projecting pavilions, each of which have two towers. The central section's middle seven bays contain carvings by sculptor John Thomas
