He foundedthe Catholic Universe, and, an attempt havingbeen made to tax Roman Catholic churches andschools, he was completely successful in resistingit in the courts. During his administration of thediocese of Cleveland the number of Roman Catho-lics has largely increased. In 1884 it amounted to174,000. The average number of children attend-ing the 123 parochial schools is 23,000. There are184 priests, 217 churches, 21 chapels, 71 stations,.
