Islands of Orkney, Scotland. The Pictish Shamrock house with the Broch of Gurness in the background.
Islands of Orkney, Scotland. Picturesque view of the Pictish Shamrock house in the broch village at Gurness, with the Broch of Gurness in the background. This medieval shamrock shaped dwelling dates between the 5th to 8th century AD. The dwelling has been moved from its original location and reconstructed. Dated somewhere between 500BC and 200BC, the Broch of Gurness Iron Age settlement lay covered by earth and undiscovered until 1929. The settlement is considered as one of the best preserved examples of a broch village. Now a popular tourist attraction the ancient settlement is managed by Historic Scotland and is open to visitors at specified times.
