Infected shoulder capsule. Artwork showing an infection of the capsule of the glenohumeral joint of the shoulder. This is a ball-and-socket joint, with the head ('ball') of the humerus (upper arm bone, right) covered in cartilage and connective tissue (light blue). The head of the humerus fits into a 'socket' formed by the scapula (shoulder blade) and clavicle (collar bone), both shown in part here with ligaments (white) binding them together. The collar bone is across top, with the scapula at centre to lower left. The socket is outlined in blue, with the red area indicating inflammation due to the infection.
