A pillar carved as a dragon at the entrance to a Chinese temple in Kanowit Sarawak Malaysia

Chinese temples are usually highly ornate, decorated with carvings of mythical creatures and deities, many of them designed as guardians to keep evil spirits out of the temple. Such is the case here, where dragons curl around gateway pillars, protecting a temple entrance. Seen in Kanowit, on the banks of the Rejang River, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, a place with a large Chinese population.
