From1832 to 18-45, when Middlesex and Essex formed the NorthernDistrict, he was District Attorney, and conducted with markedability some of the most famous criminal cases in the annals ofthe court, having as antagonists such lawyers as Webster andChoate. In 1851 he was elected Clerk of Courts of Essex, anddied in office September 5. 1870, aged seventy-two years.
