DECVMANI NARBONENS Five miles up the valley from Le Boulou is Ceret,where tombs have been discovered bearing signs ofremote antiquity, though mention of it commences inthe ninth century. During the period of the Frenchoccupation (1641-1660) this town, with Ille in the TetValley, obtained franchises and liberties which othertowns of Roussillon had enjoyed for centuries. It washere that the conference between representatives ofFrance and Spain for the delimitation of the frontierin 1660 was held. The most imposing view is from the bed of the day was delightful, and the water and sand quitewarm to the feet of the waders who scrambled downthe steep, bush-covered banks to obtain the point ofview of the drawing.
