Portrait William Shakespeare statue, pedimented niche between Corinthian Columns, Theatre Royal, Peter Street, Manchester, UK

The Neo-Classical Theatre Royal opened in 1845 and is the oldest surviving theatre building, now Grade 2 listed, in Manchester. The sandstone ashlar building was a theatre 1845-1921, when it closed due to growing competition. It has since been used as a cinema, becoming a bingo hall in 1972 and a night-club in 1978. The night-club closed in 2009 and the building became unoccupied. In 2013 it was bought by the Edwardian Group, with a view to restoration and possible re-use as a theatre. Above the entrance on Peter Street, between tall Corinthian columns, is a niche containing a statue of William Shakespeare, seen here.
