It hasbeen said that the character of a garden is expressed by its details, andthat the prime issue in garden design is to express individuality and char-acter. Of course in the preliminary sketch, the details are merely locatedwith respect to their best position and use in the design, but the final de-tailed drawing is very complete in its specifications, so complete, in fact,that the contractor can easily understand at a glance what is required ofhim and carry out the construction accordingly. As will be seen from thedetail plates, a plan, elevation, and section are required. The principles ofharmony, beauty of line, proportion, and eternal fitness, emphasized inarchitectural construction are striven for in the designing of garden de-tails.
