A woman of the Wodaabe tribe, also called Mbororo, chooses a partner at the Gerewol (also spelt Guerewol) festival in rural Chad. At this annual gathering of nomadic pastoralists of the tribe, male suitors perform lengthy dancing and singing rituals to attract the attention of young women whom they impress with their stamina and physical attractiveness. Performing the Yaake, a line dance, men battle it out for sexual supremacy, hoping to be chosen by one of the female judges, who may take him as her lover. Wodaabe women enjoy sexual freedom and may marry and divorce at will. No stigma is attached to setting aside one's marriage vows at Gerewol, whether temporarily or permanently.
