The wind wassoft and mild, and as I struck west, Beinn Bhrotain andMonadh Mor—the two big hills that guard the Lairig nearits southern end—^showed darkly through the mist, theircorries heavily splashed with fresh autumn snow. The Lui-beag burn was in spate, its waters having that characteristicappearance of snaa bree. From where the track crossesthe burn near the foot of Carn a Mhaim ike south-facingcorries of Ben MacDhui and the conical summit of theDerry Cairngorm presented an almost unbroken surface ofsnow. Eve
