DART asteroid collision, illustration

Illustration of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft deliberately impacting with Dimorphos, a moonlet of the asteroid Didymos (top right, not to scale). The mission was a test of whether such an impact would deflect an asteroid heading towards Earth. The test was successful, and altered the orbit of Dimorphos around Didymos by 32 minutes. The collision occurred on the 26th September 2022.
