This sketch by Benson Lossing is from Battery Castle, the site of the cannon Whistling Dick and opposite

In the Civil War (1861-1865), the Vicksburg Campaign (November 1862-July 1863) was major. The Union believed a direct assault would fail and so devised a plan to attack from the rear, a plan that included a canal. This view of the peninsula opposite Vicksburg shows the site of the canal, from a contemporary sketch made by American historian Benson Lossing To make the sketch Lossing who stood on the top of a mound in "Battery Castle" in which was mounted a 32-pounder rifled cannon, known as "Whistling Dick." The cannon had belonged to the Confederates, who gave it its name. At the time of this sketch, the river was full and the peninsular partially submerged. The canal is indicated by the broad white line beyond the trees on the peninsula.
