Boys playing percussion instruments with African origins such as drums and the atabaque, to help devotees get into trance. Every year, the city of Salvador, Bahia, pays homage to the sea goddess Iemanja on February 2. At dawn, rituals begin, and thousands of candles are set on light and prayers, chants and dances occur simultaneously alongside the sandy beach. Salvador, Brazil. February 2, 2008.
