An old engraving of people out and about at Seven Dials, Camden, London, England, UK during the Victorian era. Seven Dials is a road junction (and area) that is now essentially part of London's Covent Garden and the West End districts. Seven streets converge at circular junction, at the centre of which is a column bearing six sundials. Thomas Neale designed its plan in the 1690s. Originally it had six roads converging, although this was later increased to seven. The layout was chosen to produce triangular plots, in order to maximise the frontage of houses to be built, as property rentals were charged per foot of frontage. After the successful development of the nearby Covent Garden Piazza area nearby, Neale hoped that Seven Dials would be popular with wealthy residents. This was not to be and the area gradually deteriorated. At one stage seven pubs faced onto Seven Dials. In the 1800s Seven Dials was among the most notorious slums in London. However, today buildings have been restored and Seven Dials is a prosperous, popular, fashionable shopping and entertainment district.
