Prostate gland removal. Artwork of the male reproductive system shown in vertical section from the side, with the red line indicating the tissue and organs removed during a radical prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer. The cancer (orange) has started to spread from the prostate gland (pink) towards the seminal vesicles. The genitals are at left, with the bladder above the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is most prevalent in men over 50 years of age. Treatment is with hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or surgical removal of the prostate. If the cancer can be treated early, the prognosis is better than if it has started to spread, as shown here.
