William A. Oefelein, American test pilot and astronaut, suiting up for shuttle mission STS-116 in 2006. Oefelein, born 1965, was selected by NASA in 1988. He piloted the Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-116 mission in December 2006. Oefelein drew media attention in 2007 when fellow astronaut Lisa Nowak, with whom he had had an affair, was charged with attempting to kidnap his girlfriend. Nowak later pleaded guilty to various charges. Oefelein and Nowak became the first astronauts ever dismissed from NASA.
