In the under-taking he had the approval and earnestsupport of .\dmiral Porter, who refused toconsider for a moment the abandonmentof any of his vessels even though the RedRiver expedition had been ordered to re-turn and General Banks was chafing at de-lay and sending messages to Porter that histroops must be got in motion at once.
