Cashmere goats with red and blue painted horns, near Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia
Much of the area outside Ulaan Baatar consists of treeless steppes and it is common to see herders grazing their flocks and the occasional compact towns or compounds fenced or walled to keep out the herds. Families of herders with their herds of horses or cashmere goats are commonly seen on the steppes. A cashmere goat is any breed of goat that produces a fine, soft, downy, winter undercoat that is spun into cashmere.
