DNA molecule, computer model. DNA (deoxyribo- nucleic acid) is the molecule that controls the growth and development of all living things. Atoms are shown as balls of dots, and are colour-coded: carbon (light blue), oxygen (red), nitrogen (dark blue), hydrogen (white/pink) and phosphorus (yel- low, not well seen). Bonds between atoms are shown as yellow or green rods. Each strand (& its bases) has a different colour. DNA comprises two sugar- phosphate strands spiralling around each other, linked by the interactions between pairs of bases along their length. The sequence of these bases determines an organism's unique genetic code. Human DNA contains around 3 billion base pairs.
